Answers to FAQs
How do the shows work?
All shows at frankenart are theme-based and open to everyone's participation. All shows are additive; they grow throughout the duration of the show through arterrarium participation (artists come and make work live at the mart). The shows usually start off with an art drop off date.
What is the store like physically?
Frankenart mart is a very small - maybe 200 square feet available - storefront in the Inner Richmond District of San Francisco. It's style is quirky and funky, not fancy.
What are the frankenart rules?
Glad you asked. There's no drinking or druggin at the store. Cell phone overuse is severely punished. Arterrarium artists are allowed no more than three friends in their entourage. The cats decide on the music selection. This is a family restaurant, so keep it clean and friendly. No attitude allowed.
Do you sell a lot of work?
It is a one-man business, supported largely by my full-time job, so the short answer is no, not yet. But, there is great interest in the mart and we are selling more and more. The most successful items at the store have been under $100; items under $15 sell pretty well. I do not have a credit card machine yet, so until then, it's cash only.
How much do I get if I sell my art at frankenart?
All art at frankenart is sold on consignment. Frankenart/ artist cut is 50/50. Artists set prices for their own work, keeping in mind the split and the government's take. Other forms of exchange are encouraged and can be negotiated with a frankenart mart representative.
Does frankenart mart host performances?
Not really, but. The space is not big enough, nor up-to-code enough to have full scale performances. Musicians, performance artists, video artists and more have used the space to create songs, to hold practice and recording sessions, and to perform for store visitors, cats and passers-by.
What about advertising?
The frankenart approach to advertising is that it is an extension of the art. I invite artists of all kinds to create designs, songs, conmmercials, souvenirs, or outreach projects to spread the word about the mart. I do a limited amount of flyering and online outreach as well.
What are the cats' names?
Reuben and Zeke are brothers. They are about 3 and a half years old and are pretty rambunctious. They like to help make art and frequently get involved in store activities. Reuben is not bad on guitar. He is a pursuer of curiosities and a tinkerer. Zeke is a window napper and lap dancer.
How can I help?
Frankenart is always in need of participation, support, and outreach. In addition, there are some physical things we could use. You will be honored forever as a frankenart patron saint if you can provide one or some of them: Digital Video Camera, Digital Video Projector for drive-in movies, Printing Services, Cat Toys, Art Supplies, Gold Bullion, Ice Cream Delivery Truck, Dinner.

Message from the Patron of the Mart:
'This my first attempt at supporting the arts on a regular basis and beginning a life of criminal activity. Down through the ages, art patrons have done unspeakable deeds and profited by the work of others. I was born for this. If it is not too much trouble, I would appreciate a brief tidbit about each applicant so I can personally assist in making the monthly choice, or just let me know who won the dart game. Power is intoxicating and the thought of turning a young artistic type to the dark side is delicious.'
